3.Hopes & Heartbeats

"We're coming, Amit" Harman said.

"When? I've been waiting for you for the last three hours. Why didn't you let me pick you up?" Amit asked, sounding both worried and annoyed.

"Because I have a surprise for you" Harman replied with a teasing smile.

"A surprise?" Amit's curiosity piqued.

"Hmm, you always surprise me, so now it's my turn" Harman said.

"I can't wait. Just come quickly" Amit urged.

"I don't think I can" Harman teased.

"Why?" Amit asked, his worry evident, making a baby-like face.

"Because our dear Preet ma'am suggested she would drop me off" Harman said, glancing at Preet, who was driving.

"What? She's driving? Where are you? I'm coming to get you" Amit said, his tone turning protective.

"We-" Harman began to say, but Preet snatched the phone from her.

"Mr. Majnu, relax! We're on our way. Just a few more minutes" Preet said with a chuckle.

"How can I relax when I know it's you who's driving? I'm warning you, Preet, I won't tolerate even a scratch on Harman" Amit warned, his protective side taking over.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now, cut the call. We've already arrived" Preet said, ending the call before Amit could respond.

As the call ended, Preet smirked and asked, "How do you tolerate him, Harman?"

"I don't tolerate him; I love him" Harman replied with a gentle smile.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever" Preet said playfully.

"Let's go" Harman said, eager to see Amit.

"Bahut jaldi hai apne hone wale se milne ki" Preet teased, nudging Harman.

( too eager to meet him)

"Aur nahi to kya?" Harman replied, and they both burst into laughter.

(Yes , of course)

"Okay, you go ahead. I'll come in a bit. Otherwise, your soon-to-be hubby will start taking my class right away. Calm him down, then I'll come" Preet said, knowing Amit's protective nature all too well.

"Yeah, you're right" Harman agreed.

With that, Harman stepped out of the car. She saw Amit standing outside the Gurdwara, pacing back and forth, anxiously checking his phone. He stopped and dialled Harman's number again. The ringtone echoed from her hand, bringing a smile to her face.

She slowly started approaching him.

"Harman, pick up the call. It must be Preet, filling Harman's ears against me. That's why she's not answering" Amit muttered to himself, unaware that Harman was now close by.

His words only made Harman smile wider.

"Harman, pick u-" He began, turning around, but his words caught in his throat as he saw Harman standing in front of him, a radiant smile on her face.

"Kaisi lag rahi hoon?" Harman asked, raising her eyebrows playfully.

(How I'm looking)

"Meri lag rahi ho" Amit replied, his voice soft with admiration.

( mine)

His words made Harman blush. She shyly lowered her gaze and hugged Amit, resting her head on his chest.

"I missed you" Harman whispered, hugging him tightly.

"I missed you more" Amit said, wrapping his arms around her.

"Hmm, I know" Harman replied, pulling away slightly to look up at him.

"You liked my surprise?" Harman asked, twirling around to show off her dress.

"How could I not?" Amit said, his eyes taking in every detail of the dress he had bought for her.
It was a dress Amit had gifted Harman. He always went out of his way to surprise her with dates and thoughtful gestures, so she decided to do something special, even if it was as simple as wearing something he had chosen for her.

"And there's one more thing" Harman said, holding out her hand.

"Wow, it shines so brightly" Amit said, noticing the colour of her mehndi

"It was meant to" Harman replied with a wink.

"But..." Amit trailed off, his voice faltering as he noticed something that wasn't quite right, even though Harman had tried to correct it. The initial on her mehndi was still not perfectly aligned.

"It doesn't matter what's on my hand, Amit. In my heart, only your initials are written" Harman said, her words full of love.

A bright smile spread across Amit's face.

"You don't have to tell me. I already know" Amit said softly.

"Shall we go?" Harman asked, ready to enter the Gurdwara.

"Of course" Amit said, taking her hand.

It was a tradition in Amit's family for newly engaged couples to visit the Gurdwara to seek blessings before starting their new life together. Harman and Amit were no exception. As they walked towards the Gurdwara, hand in hand, they knew that this was just the beginning of their beautiful journey together.

.......

"Ashwin, I only came here because you forced me. That doesn't mean I'm going inside" Rudra said, his tone firm.

"Bro, what's the point of coming here if you're not going to step inside?" Ashwin asked, his voice gentle but insistent.

"You know, Ashwin, I don't believe in God" Rudra replied, crossing his arms.

"You will when you experience His power" Ashwin said with quiet confidence.

"Looks like He's already shown you His power-that's why you're so confident" Rudra remarked, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Of course! He gave me the best person of my life" Ashwin said, a warm smile spreading across his face.

"Is that person me?" Rudra asked, trying to lighten the mood.

"You too, brother" Ashwin chuckled.

"So, there's someone else?" Rudra asked, raising an eyebrow. "When were you planning to tell me about her?"

"First, let me ask her, then I'll tell you everything" Ashwin said, his smile turning shy.

"You haven't confessed yet?" Rudra asked, surprised.

"I'm going to, very soon" Ashwin replied, a sweet, hopeful smile on his face.

"Let's go inside, and you can pray for me that she says yes" Ashwin suggested, nudging Rudra playfully.

"She'll definitely say yes. How could she resist such a sweet guy?" Rudra teased, though his voice carried a soft sincerity.

"Nah, let's go inside and pray" Ashwin insisted.

"I'm sorry, Ashwin. I'll pray from here, but I can't go inside" Rudra said, his tone firm but regretful.

"But-" Ashwin began, concern creeping into his voice.

"No more discussion" Rudra said, cutting him off with a gentle but final tone.

"Okay, then wait here for me. Don't run away. I'll be back soon" Ashwin said, giving Rudra a reassuring smile.

"Sure," Rudra replied, trying to sound casual, though his thoughts were elsewhere.

Ashwin had brought Rudra to the gurdwara because he wanted to pray for something special. Rudra, however, didn't believe in God because of personal reasons-especially what happened to his mother. Despite Ashwin's insistence, Rudra had agreed to come along, thinking it wouldn't be a big deal. But as he stood there, the memories of his mother's faith and what had happened to her weighed heavily on his heart. He couldn't help but blame God for it all.

"She used to believe in You so much. How could You let that happen?" Rudra murmured, disappointment and pain lacing his words.

"I will not go inside" he said firmly, his eyes fixed on the gurdwara.

But as he stood there, he felt a strange pull, a soft tug at his heart, urging him to go inside.

"No matter how much You tempt me, I'm not going to come  inside" he muttered stubbornly, though his resolve was beginning to waver.

He fought against the urge, resisting as best he could. But it was as if something was gently pulling him, drawing him closer to the gurdwara.

"How long is he going to take?" Rudra wondered aloud, glancing at his watch.

His eyes drifted back to the gurdwara, where the peaceful sounds of kirtan filled the air. The serenity and calm that radiated from inside began to seep into his soul, making him long to step in, if only for a moment.

Rudra took a deep breath, trying to push the feeling away. But the pull was too strong. Slowly, almost hesitantly, he took a step toward the gurdwara, the longing to find peace within its walls growing stronger with each passing second.

......

Harman and Amit entered the gurdwara, their steps perfectly in sync, a shared rhythm that spoke of their deep connection. They paused at the entrance, washing their feet in the small pool of water, a ritual cleansing before stepping into the sacred space. Together, they bowed their heads low, kissing the ground in reverence, before moving forward hand in hand.

Inside the gurdwara, the serene atmosphere embraced them, the soft hum of the kirtan filling the air with a soothing melody. Harman and Amit approached the Guru Granth Sahib, their hearts filled with gratitude and devotion. They stood side by side, closing their eyes and joining their hands in prayer.

Unbeknownst to them, Rudra was standing just a few feet away, lost in his own world of thoughts and prayers. Although Harman and Rudra were near each other, they remained unaware of each other's presence. Yet, there was a subtle feeling, an unspoken pull between them-something nameless but undeniably there.

Amit was deeply engrossed in his prayer, silently expressing his gratitude. "Thank you, God, for blessing me with such a loving partner who accepts me with all my flaws. Please give me the strength to be a better partner to her. I can't wait to marry her-please make time go faster so we can be together always. Never separate us, and grant her every wish, fulfill every desire she has."

Just as Amit finished his prayer, his phone buzzed loudly, breaking the peaceful silence. He glanced at the screen-it was an important call.

The noise made Harman open her eyes. She looked at Amit, raising her eyebrow as if to ask who it was.

"I need to take this" Amit whispered. "I'll be back."

Harman nodded, watching as Amit left to take the call. She was about to start her own prayer when she heard a soft voice nearby.

"Hey Bhagwan, main toh kabhi aap pe vishwas nahi karta tha, lekin aaj bas ek baar meri baat sun lo. Main usse itna pyaar karta hoon jitna maine kabhi kisi se nahi kiya. Aapko sirf ek hi baar meri madad karni hogi, usse meri zindagi mein le aayiye. Uske bina, meri life mein koi rang nahi hai. Agar aap sach mein ho, toh please meri yeh iccha poori kar do. Main aapse waada karta hoon ki phir kabhi aapko shikayat ka mauka nahi dunga. Bas usse mujhe de do, yeh meri dil se guzaarish hai," Rudra prayed earnestly, his voice filled with emotion.

(Oh God, I never really believed in you, but today, just this once, please listen to me. I love her more than I’ve ever loved anyone. You just need to help me this one time, bring her into my life. Without her, there’s no colour in my world. If you truly exist, then please fulfil this one wish of mine. I promise I’ll never give you a reason to complain again. Just give her to me, this is my heartfelt request)

Harman couldn't help but smile at the sincerity in Rudra's voice. It was sweet and almost endearing to hear someone praying so earnestly for love.

"Give him his girl, God" Harman whispered playfully in her mind. "What's the harm in gaining a new follower? He sounds so sincere."

But as she listened his  prayer, she couldn't suppress a small chuckle at the way he was pleading with God.

"Eeww, does this sound like begging? Is this how people pray for their loved ones? I hope Ashwin isn't doing the same!"Rudra said .

Hearing Ashwin's name snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned her head slightly and saw Rudra standing nearby, his eyes still closed, lost in his prayer. "Mr Rudra".

.......

Flashback

Harman was rushing through the crowd when she collided with someone. Before she could fall, he caught her, preventing her from hitting the ground.

"Brother, you're here?" Ashwin asked, surprised.

Harman, regaining her balance, stepped out of Rudra's embrace, but Rudra's gaze remained fixed on her.

"Harman, this is my brother, Rudra" Ashwin introduced, noticing the awkward tension.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Rudra" Harman said, her smile polite. Rudra, however, continued to stare at her, speechless.

"Rudra, meet Harman. She's my  friend."

Rudra's mind raced, thinking, "Isn't it like destiny that she's so close to me?" He struggled to tear his eyes away from her.

Harman, sensing Rudra's fascination, smiled softly. "So, you're Rudra. Ashwin talks about you a lot."

Rudra finally managed to speak, though his voice was still tinged with awe. "Really? "

Ashwin watched them with a knowing smile. " I'm glad you two finally met. Harman is beautiful , isn't she?"

"Absolutely" Rudra agreed, trying to regain his composure. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Harman."

Harman's smile widened, intrigued by Rudra's reaction. "The pleasure's mine, mr rudra."

End of flashback::

( I could write their detialed interaction but let's just end it here)

......

Rudra, unaware of her presence, continued, "Whatever, it seems like he really loves her. Make his wish come true, you know he's an introvert and shy type. I've never seen him this happy and open before-he seems serious. Make his wish come true. You can drop mine if you want, it's not like I'm asking much from you. Yeah, there's this girl, but she has a boyfriend."

Harman bit her lip to keep from laughing out loud.

"What about you separate them for me?" Rudra added, almost mischievously.

This time, Harman couldn't hold back her laughter. She quickly covered her mouth, hoping not to disturb the solemn atmosphere.

"But why would you do that? It's not like you listen to me anyway" Rudra said, his voice tinged with resignation. "Whatever, I don't care. If she's meant for me, I'll get her. If not, then what can I do?"

"Cute" was the only word that came to Harman's mind as she continued to silently giggle at Rudra's candid and somewhat naive prayer.

......

Harman shook her head, a soft smile on her lips. As Rudra finished his prayer, Harman silently prayed for him as well. Together, they both bent to take blessings, unknowingly mirroring each other's movements. When they stood up, they found themselves standing side by side, though still unaware of each other's identity.

A small smile escaped Harman's mouth as she began to move ahead . As they were close, her dupatta got caught on Rudra's watch, but Harman didn't notice. Rudra noticed the snag and called out to her softly, but she didn't hear him. The fabric didn't rip, so he decided to follow her, staying close behind as they made their way around the Guru Granth Sahib. Harman walked in front, and Rudra followed just behind her, trying not to disturb the peacefulness around them. As they circled the sacred scripture, he couldn't help but notice that her scent was oddly familiar to him.

"She smells like Harman," Rudra thought to himself, his curiosity piqued.

He tried to get a glimpse of her face, but her dupatta obscured his view. Not wanting to make a scene by calling out loudly, especially during the ongoing rituals, Rudra remained silent, waiting for the right moment.

After completing the ritual, Harman bowed one last time before making her way out of the room, with Rudra still trailing behind. Once outside, Rudra seized the opportunity.

"Excuse me, your dupatta got stuck on my watch" Rudra called out, his voice gentle yet firm.

Harman halted mid-step and turned to face him, surprised. "Oh! Let me take it off" Rudra offered, carefully trying to free the delicate fabric from his watch.

Harman looked down at her dupatta and then at Rudra, a bit puzzled. "When did this happen?" she wondered silently.

Rudra was being as gentle as possible, trying not to tear the fabric, but it was stubbornly stuck. His concentration was intense, and he didn't want to damage the cloth.

"Let me help" Harman said, stepping closer to assist him.

The moment her fingers brushed against his hand, Rudra felt a shiver run down his spine. It was as if electricity coursed through his body, making his heart race. He felt like time had stopped.

"It's really her" he thought, barely able to believe it.

He slowly raised his eyes to look at her, and time seemed to freeze. Harman glanced up at him and smiled, her expression soft and kind. She then focused on untangling the dupatta.

Rudra was entranced, unable to take his eyes off her. "Was Mum right? Do you really make wishes come true?" he whispered to himself, his voice filled with awe.

He couldn't help but admire her-her flawless skin, her deep, dark eyes framed by long natural lashes, the soft blush on her cheeks, and her naturally pink lips. She looked effortlessly beautiful, as if she hadn't applied any makeup at all.

"God really took His time creating you" Rudra thought, overwhelmed by her presence.

Harman's soft laughter broke through his reverie. "I didn't know you had such a funny side, Mr. Rudra" she teased.

"Huh?" Rudra blinked, pulled out of his thoughts by her words.

"Sorry, but I heard everything you were saying" Harman said with a playful smile, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him.

Rudra was caught off guard, his cheeks flushing slightly. "What's her name?" Harman asked, tilting her head curiously.

"Harman" he replied without thinking, still flustered.

"Oh, she has the same name as me" Harman remarked with a chuckle as she successfully freed her dupatta from his watch.

"You're quite the gentleman" she said, smiling at him. "The way you followed me and told me about this instead of just ripping it off-very considerate of you."

Rudra smiled, his heart swelling with warmth. "You'll surely get her" Harman continued, "I even prayed for you."

Rudra's smile grew wider, his heart pounding with joy. "I..." he began, wanting to say something more, but before he could, a familiar voice called out to him.

"Bro!" Ashwin's voice echoed as he spotted Rudra inside the gurdwara.

"Ashwin!" Harman's face lit up with happiness upon seeing Ashwin.

"Harman, you're here too? What a surprise!" Ashwin said, walking over to them.

"Yeah, exactly" Harman said with a mischievous grin. "So, you're here to pray for the girl you want, just like your brother?" she teased.

"Like brother?" Ashwin was taken aback by her words, his eyes widening in surprise. He turned to Rudra with a questioning look. "Really, bro?"

Rudra, feeling cornered, quickly tried to cover up. "I'm getting late; let's go now" he said, trying to steer the conversation away from himself.

Harman, noticing his attempt to hide, smiled knowingly. "You go ahead; I want to stay here a bit longer with Harman" Ashwin said, waving off Rudra's suggestion.

"As you wish," Rudra replied, a bit flustered. "But I really need to go. Excuse me, Harman, it was nice meeting you" Rudra said, his voice polite but tinged with regret.

"For me too" Harman replied, extending her hand for a handshake.

Rudra took her hand, and as they shook hands, he felt an overwhelming sense of connection, as if her hand was made to fit perfectly in his. He didn't want to let go, lingering in the moment longer than necessary. But eventually, Harman gently pulled her hand away, leaving Rudra feeling a pang of disappointment.

"Okay then, I'll go. Bye, Harman. Bye, Ashwin" Rudra said, trying to keep his voice steady.

"Bye-bye," Harman and Ashwin said in unison, their voices warm and friendly.

As Rudra walked away, he couldn't stop himself from glancing back at Harman one last time, his heart filled with emotions he couldn't quite name.

.....

Harman playfully nudged Ashwin, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "So, when are you going to tell me who the girl is that you came here to pray for?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Ashwin's eyes softened, filled with a warmth that was unmistakable. "Soon, very soon" he replied, his gaze lingering on her with a look so affectionate it made her heart skip a beat.

"It means not today, then" Harman pouted in mock disappointment, crossing her arms and making an exaggerated sad face.

Ashwin chuckled, charmed by her antics. "Hmm" he nodded, still smiling at her playful behaviour.

"Okay, as you wish" Harman sighed dramatically, but the teasing glint in her eyes remained.

Ashwin, still smiling, asked, "You came here alone?"

"No, I came here with Preet and my fi-" Harman began, intending to mention Amit, but she was interrupted by Preet's voice calling out to her.

"Sorry, Harman, I got late" Preet said, walking up to them, slightly out of breath.

Harman turned to Preet, noticing the tension in her friend's face. "You look upset. What happened?" she asked, concern creeping into her voice.

Preet huffed, clearly annoyed. "Yeah, I ran into a jerk who completely ruined my mood," she grumbled. Then, turning to Ashwin, she added, "Handsome guys-only handsome on the outside, not on the inside. I hope you're not like that, Ashwin."

Ashwin smiled, a bit amused by her bluntness. "I try not to be" he replied with a light chuckle.

Harman, intrigued by Preet's outburst, asked, "What exactly happened?"

Preet rolled her eyes, clearly still frustrated. "This guy, right? He looked like a total prince charming, but as soon as he opened his mouth, it was all downhill from there. He was  full of himself! He thought just because he's good-looking, he could get away with saying anything. I seriously can't stand people like that," Preet vented, her voice rising slightly in exasperation.

Harman frowned, her protective instincts kicking in. "What did he say to you?"

......

Flashback::

Preet was rushing, having locked her car and realizing she was already late. She thought giving Harman and Amit some alone time would be good, but she lost track of time scrolling through reels. Now, she was in a hurry, not wanting to delay further.

As she hurried towards the gurdwara, she accidentally bumped into a guy. She stumbled, about to fall, but he quickly caught her by the waist, pulling her close and preventing the fall.

Their eyes met, and for a moment, they were locked in each other's gaze.

"I know I'm handsome, but you can stop checking me out now. Or if not, at least stand on your feet-you're pretty heavy" he teased, breaking Preet's chain of thoughts.

Preet blinked, still somewhat caught off guard, but then her eyes narrowed. "Excuse me? I wasn't checking you out! I just... wasn't looking where I was going!"

"Sure, sure" he chuckled, still holding her close. "But it seems like you're having a hard time standing on your own. Should I be worried?"

Preet quickly straightened up, pushing away from him, though still flustered. "I can stand just fine, thank you very much! Maybe you should try walking straight next time."

"Hmm" he pretended to think it over, his playful grin widening. "I think it's more about you not being able to handle how incredibly charming I am. Can't blame you for getting a little weak in the knees."

"Oh please," Preet rolled her eyes, though a small smile tugged at her lips. "Don't flatter yourself. I've seen better."

"Is that so?" he quirked an eyebrow, clearly enjoying the banter. "Then why are you still standing so close? Afraid you might trip again?"

"As if!" she scoffed, stepping back and crossing her arms. "And for your information, you should watch where you're going too. Maybe you're the one who can't resist bumping into pretty girls."

"Touche" he laughed. "But let's not pretend you didn't enjoy our little encounter. Admit it, I saved you from a not-so-glamorous fall."

Preet huffed, still a bit embarrassed but trying to maintain her composure. "Fine, thanks for that... I guess. But don't get used to it. Next time, I'll make sure to avoid you completely."

"We'll see about that," he said, giving her a wink. "Something tells me our paths will cross again. And when they do, I'll be ready to catch you-again."

Preet turned to walk away, but not before throwing a quick glance over her shoulder. "I'll make sure it doesn't happen."

As she walked off, she couldn't help but hide a small smile, her heart still racing from the unexpected encounter. The guy watched her go, still grinning, knowing this wouldn't be the last time they crossed paths.

End of flashback::
.......

Preet waved her hand dismissively. "Nothing worth repeating. Just your typical entitled nonsense. But it was enough to spoil my mood. I really didn't need that today."

They were in the middle of talking when Ashwin's phone rang.

"Wait a second" Ashwin said as he stepped aside to take the call.

Amit came back and said "We should go, Harman. family is waiting."

"But I haven't even prayed yet, I haven't even entered the gurdwara!" Preet protested, clearly disappointed.

"Do everything you want on your own, Miss Preet" Amit said, his tone firm but not unkind. "But we need to go."

"What happened?" Harman asked, sensing something was off.

Amit leaned in and whispered something in Harman's ear.

"Is that so?" Harman asked, surprised by what Amit had said.

Amit nodded, confirming it with a serious expression.

"We really have to go, Preet" Harman said, now understanding the urgency.

"But-" Preet began, ready to argue, but Amit cut her off.

"No buts, Preet. Help yourself. Bye-bye, see you soon" Amit said as he gently but firmly led Harman away.

"Sorry" Harman mouthed to Preet as she glanced back apologetically.

Preet frowned, pretending to be angry with Harman as she watched them go.

Before they exited the gurdwara, Harman stopped just outside and joined her hands, silently making a wish. As she did so, a soft smile crept onto both Amit's and Rudra's faces-Rudra, who had been watching her from behind a tree, secretly keeping an eye on her. Seeing Harman make a wish, Rudra and Amit , they couldn't help but follow suit, joining their hands and making their own wishes.

Rudra's thoughts were a mix of desperation and determination. "Jokes aside, Bhagwan, let's be serious now. Let's make a deal-separate them, and I'll start believing in you. I've never asked you for anything since Mom died, but Mom always said that wishes made to you always come true, so I'm making one now. Separate them and fix me with her.I know I'm being mean but I can't help , Either fix her with me or make me loose interest in her for the best.  Show me how right Mom was. Don't worry, I won't harm your daughter. I'll keep her as my queen-she already rules my heart as it is. Give her every happiness she deserves, and if possible, include me in that happiness."

Amit's  thoughts shifted to his possessiveness. "I know I become possessive sometimes-help me, God. I don't want to be bad to her. She doesn't say it, but I can feel she's always trying to put up with it. I know she loves me, that's why she endures it, and you know I love her too. Help me control this possessiveness, God. I don't want to hurt her in any way. Give her the best she deserves, and make me worthy enough to be the one who fits into that 'best' she deserves."

Meanwhile, Harman was deep in her own thoughts, her heart full of gratitude. "You've already given me everything without me even asking-such caring and loving parents, a sister-like friend, and now such caring and loving in-laws, not to mention my possessive hubby-how can I forget him? I just wish they all stay happy and healthy and that all their wishes come true. Also, let's include Ashwin's brother's wish. He seems really into that girl. He was right; it might be unjust to fix her with him when she's already in a relationship. Do what's best for everyone involved. And if not her, then find someone just as good, someone he likes, for him. And as for Ashwin, he also mentioned he has a wish. I hope it comes true if it's in his favour-he's such a nice boy and deserves the best."

Ashwin, having finished his call, was walking back towards the gurdwara when he saw Harman standing outside, her hands joined in prayer. A smile naturally formed on his face as he watched her. Without thinking, he joined his hands too and made a wish.

"God, give her everything she's asking for, even tenfold. Also, give me the courage to express my love to Harman. Give me the words to convey my emotions."

And so, four people stood there, each making a wish for the ones they loved, each hoping that their wishes would be granted. But whose wish will come true? To find out, you'll have to keep reading.

I got a bit carried away with writing about their wishes and all the heartfelt stuff. 😶🥲 I hope it doesn't make this part seem dull-though, if it does, I promise to fix it up.
